What sets the Davis approach apart from other learning support programs? We don't view dyslexia as a problem to be remediated, but rather, a gift to be embraced.
Clients are not asked to eliminate their dyslexic state. Davis facilitators teach the essential skill of finding and maintaining a state of optimal orientation. Being oriented eliminates distorted perceptions that symbols cause for dyslexic thinkers. During a program, clients practice the skill of getting and staying oriented.
One key task of a Davis facilitator is to help her client recognize the value of both states -- orientation and disorientation.
We help our clients recognize the areas where their dyslexic thinking abilities are the key to creativity, originality, problem solving and other gifts. During a program, the client begins to identify when it is productive to operate in a disoriented state, vs. when it is essential to be optimally oriented. Ron Davis helps us understand: This type of imaginative exploration is a powerful tool. It lies at the heart of dyslexics’ impressive ability:
"Thinking outside the box," making the impossible, possible.
