Davis® Mastery for Math
age range: 8 years old to the upper limits (no one is too old!)
Structure of the Program:
Perceptual Distortions: Perceiving information accurately is the essential first step for reading, listening, learning any new concept. When text or speech is not perceived accurately confusion sets in and mistakes begin. Orientation Counseling® teaches focusing tools that allow individuals to control the accuracy of their perceptions. In an oriented state your brain accurately perceives what your senses take in. In a disoriented state distortions are perceived as reality.
Confusion Caused by Numerals, Math Signs and Symbols: Once the client has the ability to turn off disorientation, the next step is to eliminate triggers that cause disorientation. The main math triggers are: letters, numerals, math signs and symbols. Words such as and, by, of, from, into also trigger disorientation. These are words without mental images attached to them.
Symbol Mastery:
Letters: During the program week the individual constructs upper and lower case alphabets out of clay. Through a series of exercises and tests, the client will detriggers all 26 letters, upper and lower case. This can take anywhere from 4 to 14 hours.
Numerals: The client constructs numerals out of clay as well as the value of each numeral using clay balls. The client eliminates numeral triggers by mastering them through a series of exercises.
Math Symbols: The client constructs and masters all common math symbols : +, −, ×, ÷, =, < >, √ , etc.
Math Trigger Words: During the program week the client begins the process of mastering math trigger words. The remaining words are done post program.
Confusion with Underlying Math Concepts: Many individuals who struggle with math lack a clear understanding of concepts such as change, sequence, cause and effect. Fundamental comprehension of these concepts is essential for computation and problem solving.
Concept Mastery: Once the client has focusing tools, the client explores the following concepts: change, time, sequence, consequence, before and after, cause and effect, order vs. disorder. The client identifies examples found in the real world. Concept of time is explored in depth. The client creates and masters models that illustrate these real worlds concepts. Finally, the client searches for and identifies examples of each concept within basic number sentences.
Confusion with Number sense and Basic Arithmetic: All of elementary mathematics is explored and mastered using clay: counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, fractions, decimals, place value.
Confusion in Doing Basic Arithmetic with Paper and Pencil: Once all basic functions are modeled in clay, the facilitator guides the client to connect these processes to paper and pencil.
Structure of the Program:
- 7-8 day intensive; each day consisting of 6 hours of 1-on-1 guided learning
- instruction for support person for Post-Program work
- 3 Post-Program review sessions
- ongoing phone contact and email communication
